#Emergence

QINGDAO, CHINA

Situated on the coastline of China’s Yellow Sea, SIIC Center – Qingdao Beer City is home to the world’s second largest International Beer Festival.

Andrew Furmanski led our Shanghai Art + Design team to collaborate with Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation (SIIC) on the design, fabrication and installation of Emergence, a curved, brass entry canopy for this landmark civic development.

Measuring only 0.6 x 1m at the base, Emergence expands to an 8m x 19m soffit,
revealing dramatic arches and a generous architectural space. Standing at over 14m tall, the canopy emerges from the ground plane and soars above pedestrians, honouring the vision of the development by reflecting the city’s growth. With over 850 brass panels,
the canopy’s surface is perforated by internal lighting, creating the illusion of
shimmering lights on the water’s surface at night.
