Fiona Foley

Born in Maryborough, Queensland in 1964, Fiona Foley is one of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary Indigenous artists. Foley's creative practice explores and dismantles historical stereotypes through painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, mixed-media and installation.

Throughout her career, Foley has taken an active role in promoting indigenous identity becoming a highly regarded curator, writer, activist and academic. She is a founding member of the Boomalli Aboriginal Artist Cooperative, and completed her PhD with Griffith University in 2017 where she examined the 1897 Queensland legislation, The Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act. In 2014 Foley was the recipient of an Australia Council Visual Arts Laureate Award.

UAP has worked alongside Foley on a number of her public artworks, including Bible and Bullets at Redfern Park and Witnessing to Silence at the Brisbane Magistrates Court.
