Robert Andrew

Robert Andrew

Robert Andrew is a descendant of the Yawuru people of the Broome area in the Kimberley, Western Australia. His art practice draws upon the histories of his own family and engages with issues of cultural identity and Indigenous history. Andrew contrasts technological elements with the natural; with water, ochre or oxides, as a device to speak of cultural duality and mixed heritage. Revelatory in intent, Andrew’s often kinetic installations create shifting textural landscapes and aim to ‘re-present’ Indigenous history by the scraping back of dominating histories to reveal the denied, the forgotten and the hidden.

Andrew has won international commissions, Australian art awards and his work has been exhibited in curated shows at venues including the Cairns Regional Gallery, the Australian National University Gallery, the State Library of Queensland and the National Gallery of Victoria.
