Rose B. Simpson is a distinguished artist renowned for her exploration of the empowerment and resilience of Indigenous peoples, particularly through her innovative use of ceramics. Based in Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, Simpson draws inspiration from her ancestral heritage, utilising clay, a material that has been passed down through generations in her family. This deep connection to her roots allows her to delve into the complex themes in her artwork, celebrating the rich histories of both her community and the broader landscape of the United States. Her unique “slap-slab” technique enables her to craft intricate ceramic forms that convey powerful narratives of strength and interpersonal relationships.
One of her most notable works, Behold, is a monumental sculpture standing nearly 25 feet tall and weighing 3380 pounds, capturing the bond between a mother and child. The piece features beads strung along their shoulders, symbolising their emotional connection, complemented by a large ladder that signifies their mental bond. Simpson’s artistic vision draws parallels between the growth of children and the branches of a tree, highlighting the deep-rooted relationships that shape our identities and experiences.
The work is a profound, site-specific tribute to the Indigenous peoples of California, reflecting on the urban landscape that still bears scars from the colonial violence of the Mission system. ‘Behold’ refuses to let us forget the history of displacement faced by Native communities.
Currently on temporary display atop the SFMOMA, Behold offers audiences a unique chance to engage with its profound themes. The commission, facilitated by the Jessica Silverman Gallery, exemplifies a collaboration that required the expertise of various professionals, including our Los Angeles and Rock Tavern teams, who played a crucial role in bringing Simpson’s vision to life.
Beginning with a life-size clay original, the sculpture was scanned, and its intricate details were refined by a design team. This careful attention ensured that every nuance was preserved during the casting process, culminating in a stunning bronze finish. The beads were cast separately to achieve the intended look. With a specially constructed travel frame for safe rigging and installation.
