Founded in 2011 by British artist Giles Miller, Giles Miller Studio creates works that explore the relationship between surface, structure, and sculpture. Drawing on research into biophilia and the ways people respond to form, scale, texture, and colour, the studio develops sensory-driven artworks and environments that encourage deeper connections between people and place.
The studio's work Fractalism brings movement, texture, and sensory engagement to the public realm at IQHQ's Spur innovation district in South San Francisco. Installed on the corner of a new life sciences building adjacent to a busy railway station, the large-scale sculpture responds to the constant flow of commuters, creating an ever-changing visual experience as light shifts across its surface. Stretching 17 metres across and composed of 4,634 individually oriented aluminium petals, the work unfolds like a metallic wave, bringing softness and motion to the building's clean architectural geometry.
Working closely with Giles Miller Studio, our China team fabricated and assembled the artwork's thousands of aluminium components, ensuring both precision and durability. Through a combination of advanced fabrication and assembly, each aluminium petal was laser cut, anodised, and individually fixed to a custom-engineered framework, with reinforced connection details designed to maintain the integrity of the form under environmental loads. Each petal was individually positioned on a custom aluminium framework and reinforced to withstand the environmental conditions of the site while maintaining a light, open appearance. The finish captures and reflects the changing daylight, creating subtle shifts in tone, shadow, and perception throughout the day.
