Isabel Gibson and Helen Chesnet, the creative duo behind the London-based artist and design team Isabel + Helen, are captivating audiences with their innovative installations that blend art, design, and engineering. Their works invite viewers to engage in a dynamic dialogue about time and movement. Their latest exhibition 'In Flow' marks their first showcase in mainland China. This ambitious piece exemplifies their unique approach and redefines the relationship between art and its observers.

Currently on display at the Temple Plaza water feature until 12 October, the installation features a stunning 10-metre-high windmill that captures the attention of visitors with its striking presence. As the windmill spins, it creates a mesmerising geometric montage, enhanced by the gentle evening breeze that brings the piece to life. At night, the windmill’s rotation casts captivating light and shadows, forming a star map in the sky, while a carefully curated soundtrack mimicking the soothing sounds of wind and water creates an immersive soundscape. This balance of visual and auditory elements encourages a contemplative experience that evolves from day into night.

People at Man Square are welcomed into this interactive space, where they can stroll around the perimeter of the water pool and take a moment to rest on adjacent benches. The inviting design encourages individuals to immerse themselves in the installation, inspiring them to either find inspiration or enter a meditative state as they observe the windmill’s graceful movements. With a variety of shapes and colours, the windmills twirl energetically in the breeze, urging spectators to discover their own rhythm and connection to the world around them, embodying the essence of being 'In Flow.'

The Shanghai team was invited to collaborate with Isabel + Helen to bring this unique artwork to life at Man Square. Drawing inspiration from the hexagonal structure of the “Ziku Tower,” a well-preserved ancient building at Taikoo Li Chengdu, the windmill incorporates a hexagonal base and vibrant bursts of colour. A standout feature of this project was the team's ability to arrange multi-angle filming and supplementary footage, which allowed the artists to experience the installation remotely. The successful completion of the installation underscores the importance of adaptability, coordination, and a shared vision in the realm of public art, reminding us all of the beauty found in connecting across differences.
