Kaleidoscope, a playground installation at Jollyman Park in Cupertino, California, represents the power of creative collaboration. This imaginative project brought together our LA team, Scientific Art Studio, MIG, Hypersonic, and QLM to bring this vision to life.
Standing 14 feet tall and weighing 1,700 pounds, Kaleidoscope is an interactive sculpture that encourages children to explore, relax, and collaborate. The installation features three handwheels that control four rows of rotating "petals," allowing independent operation in either direction. Safety remains the most important feature with an internal speed limiter that automatically engages when petals rotate too quickly, ensuring safe play while children learn about teamwork.
We used acrylic vibrant panels that were sourced from 3Form and processed before being shipped to Hypersonic in Brooklyn. This is where skilled technicians integrated them with the internal mechanical system.
Our Rock Tavern team designed the artwork within budget constraints, selecting materials and coordinating engineering specifications for permit applications. We completed the technical design, oversaw fabrication, sandblasted stainless steel tubes, and worked with Hypersonic to overcome challenging design requirements to get the leaves to spin independently.
