#Miao Minority Group Tapestries

SHANGHAI, CHINA

Tishman Speyer creatively led UAP’s design team to commission a suite of
elements, including large scale tapestries and photographs for their buildings and
offices in Shanghai, China.

The design process engaged local artisans from the Chinese Miao ethnic minority in the Guizhou region of Southwest China, renowned for their handicraft traditions in textiles and adornment pieces. Providing access to this unique culture and their traditions has not only realised a unique body of work, but embodied Miao traditions, recontextualising them for a modern audience.

Each of the tapestries speak to traditional hand-pleated skirts worn by Miao women and festival jewellery and adornments worn during seasonal celebrations.
