Natasha Bowdoin is a visual artist who pushes the physical boundaries of painting into immersive environments.. Her large-scale installations ask us to reimagine our relationship to the natural world, reconnecting to a sense of wonder for the world around us. Her latest project and first outdoor sculptures, titled Seedling, debuts at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas as part of their permanent collection.
Seedling began with an engaging three-day artist studio session in early 2024, where Bowdoin collaborated with our Rock Tavern team to transform her two-dimensional drawings into a striking three-dimensional work. The project features intricate, brightly colored botanicals imagined by Bowdoin and expanded to a grand scale.
After a series of design sessions, the composition, color and surface of Bowdoin's floral forms were finalised. Crafted from waterjet-cut aluminium panels, these elaborate shapes are supported by a robust stainless-steel substructure, ensuring durability while enhancing their visual impact. The forms are powder coated and direct imbed surfaced, capturing the highly graphic and exuberant, painterly style Bowdoin is known for.
Bowdoin hand-painted a quarter-scale version of the sculpture’s model, which was then scanned. The result carries Bowdoin’s original painted work into a durable, outdoor format, the first of its kind for the artist.
