#Sunrise in the East

SHANGHAI, CHINA

Sui Jianguo stands as a pivotal figure in contemporary Chinese sculpture, widely recognised for his profound contributions to conceptualism. With over three decades of artistic exploration, he has cultivated an intricate understanding of creative concepts, artistic forms, media selection, and fabrication techniques. His work invites viewers into a realm of ideas and aesthetics, often delivering striking sensory experiences through impressive scales. One of his notable sculptures, 'Sunrise in the East,' pays tribute to the corporate spirit of Hudong Zhonghua, reflecting themes of national strength, self-improvement, unity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

The design of 'Sunrise in the East' marries rational structure with humanistic spirit, seamlessly integrating ancient Chinese mathematical wisdom with modern shipbuilding technology. Featuring a deconstructed upper stainless steel mesh inspired by the Yang Hui Triangle, Jianguo’s work expresses mathematical precision while corresponding with the structural aesthetics of LNG carrier cargo containment systems. The sculpture's polished surfaces refract light, creating a vibrant spectrum, while the structural welding showcases a military spirit transformed into an artistic expression. This fusion aligns with the ancient Chinese concept of creating instruments with imagery, with names engraved on the tower serving as a reminder of both historical pride and a spiritual guide for the Hudong Zhonghua community.

At the sculpture's apex, a pointed cone reaches skyward, symbolising the "infinitely small" and representing boundless spiritual energy beyond material confines. In contrast, the base features a heavy circle, embodying the "infinitely large," rooting Hudong Zhonghua deeply in the rich soil of Chinese manufacturing. This juxtaposition highlights the organisation’s resilient growth in the face of evolving challenges, supported by 24 foundations, each extending 37 metres in length. The relationship between the infinitely large and small echoes a sense of continuity and dynamism.

Visitors engaging with the sculpture enter an interactive space filled with harmonious music, where a tall globe, tinted in China Shipbuilding blue, slowly rotates at its centre. The inner walls are engraved with significant events from various product lines, establishing a sensory bridge between mathematical order and engineering aesthetics. This immersive experience accentuates the sculpture's themes and invites all who encounter it to reflect on their journey and aspirations within the Hudong Zhonghua legacy.
