Ben Mazey’s latest work, Bronze Flag Carpet, blends fluidity and playfulness with a deeply human touch. With mathematical systems as a foundation, Mazey creates flowing, undulating sculptures that invite both interaction and contemplation. He balances raw and textural surfaces with polished surfaces, striking a balance between the earthy and the refined—a reflection of the complexity of human connection.

Commissioned by Fortis and situated within the dynamic community of South Melbourne, Bronze Flag Carpet embodies the essence of cultural exchange and communal formation. As the public art manager, the curatorial vision “The Meeting Place” explores space, connection, and collective memory, it invites viewers to consider how shared environments shape our interactions and sense of belonging. Through this artistic endeavour, Mazey reimagines the meeting place as not only a physical gathering space but also a symbolic space for connection.

Installed across the building's southern façade, the twelve unique bronze forms create a vibrant space for reflection and gathering. Each piece balances material weight with a playful sense of movement, transforming the architectural landscape into a dynamic gesture that celebrates the diverse voices, histories, and connections that continue to shape the local community and beyond. Through Bronze Flag Carpet, Mazey invites us to reflect on the power of art to foster connection and reshape our understanding of shared spaces.

The creation of Bronze Flag Carpet involves a process where each panel originates as a hand-sculpted wax form. The artist’s gestures are thoughtfully preserved in the bronze castings, which feature distinct surface patterns crafted by Mazey himself. These works present a harmonious blend of individuality and unity, capturing the spirit of collaboration that defines South Melbourne.
