#Inner Styrke

CHATSWOOD, AUSTRALIA

Mika Utzon Popov, an artist of Australian and Danish heritage, was born in Copenhagen in 1971 and now calls Sydney home. His artistic journey began after he graduated from the National Art School in Sydney in 1995, and it spans a diverse range of media, including sculptural installations, design, and drawing. Popov's collaborative spirit is a hallmark of his work, as he partners with international clients and architects to bring innovative public and private art commissions to fruition.

Commissioned by Central Element, his latest installation is a fusion of artistic vision and community engagement. Created in collaboration with a team from Brisbane, the installation is designed to resonate with the vibrant spirit of the Chatswood community. Its strategic placement invites interaction and conversation, enhancing the urban landscape and fostering a deeper connection between visitors and their surroundings.

Titled Inner Styrke, the piece draws inspiration from ancient geological forms and aims to captivate onlookers from various angles. With dimensions of 2.01m (H) x 2.01m (W) x 0.65m (D). The artwork takes the shape of a large meteor that appears to have landed and cracked open, featuring contrasting textures that catch the eye. One side boasts rough-hewn cast bronze with a rich black patina, while the other presents a smooth, polished surface, symbolising the duality of inner strength and resilience. This dynamic design encourages viewers to engage with the piece from multiple perspectives, reinforcing its vibrant presence in the cityscape.

The craftsmanship of Inner Styrke is evident in every detail, from the intricately hand-crafted pattern created by Popov to the precision of the robotic milling process used for its foam pattern. Once the design was finalised, the bronze was cast in eight sections before being welded together to form a cohesive whole. The contrasting finishes enhance the artwork's narrative, with the rugged exterior evoking the raw power of nature and the polished interior inviting introspection and wonder.
