#Land of the Giant Pippies

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Alison Page is a descendant of the Dharawal and Yuin peoples. She is a prominent figure in contemporary Australian Aboriginal culture, who has recently forged a cultural connection for Sydney's transformative New Fish Market project.

The installation enhances the iconic site, representing Sydney's most significant harbourside project since the Opera House. Designed by 3XN with local firms BVN and Aspect Studios, the new Sydney Fish Market will be Australia's seafood hub, attracting over 6 million visitors annually while supporting the national seafood industry.

Page’s latest installation, ‘Land of the Giant Pippies’, is a waterplay installation that honours the significance of Sydney’s coasts. It features a playful landscape composed of concrete mounds shaped like pippies, which are clams native to Australia, with inset bronze studs and etched lines representing the tracks of shellfish.

This piece encourages exploration and reflects the artist’s Dharawal and Yuin heritage. The etched pathways mimic the movement of shellfish and ocean tides, symbolising the living energy of the sea.

Working alongside Multiplex and Infrastructure NSW, our Brisbane team handled raising the base form, pre-casting the pippies, and working on the brass features. All the work was done by Concrete Structures, while Page oversaw the design of the integrated water feature. Located at the new Sydney Fish Market site on Bridge Road, Glebe, the installation welcomes visitors to what will become a significant cultural and culinary destination.
