#Mother and Child

PORTLAND, OREGON, USA

Sculptor Isabelle Albuquerque delves into the intricate themes of communion, collective identity, love, loss, memory, and desire in her work. Drawing on her background in performance, she uses her own body as a medium to explore the fluidity of identity, engaging in conversations that highlight women’s experiences, particularly their connections to desire, sexuality, and embodiment. Her artistic approach invites diverse interpretations, prompting viewers to reflect on the complexities of identity and relationships.

Among her notable creations are sculptures inspired by human genitalia. Through these vibrant, floral forms, Albuquerque encourages contemplation of themes like fertility, motherhood, and the intimate ties that shape human experiences.

Currently on display at the Lumber Room in Portland, Oregon, the exhibition titled "The Wandering Womb" features the large-scale steel piece from her Alien Spring series, titled Mother and Child, that challenges conventional ideas of femininity and sexuality. The exhibition runs from October 11, 2025, until January 31 2026, offering a thought-provoking exploration of identity, nature, and the feminine experience. Through her art, Albuquerque fosters a dialogue about the body’s role in society, highlighting the emotional and symbolic weight of her creations.

‘Mother and Child’ was developed in collaboration with our Rock Tavern team. The journey began as Albuquerque participated in a residency with our digital team to develop models that were transformed into PMMA prints. These prints allowed for a lightweight and versatile visualisation of the artwork before being cast in polished stainless steel. It provides a modern aesthetic that enhances the viewer’s experience with the sleek finish and added longevity offered by a colour shift clear coat.
