Darian Johnson

Darian Johnson is a Pittsburgh-based painter, sculptor and illustrator whose artistic practice is rooted in attentive observation and imaginative world-building. Johnson is a resident artist at VaultArt Studio, a project of Achieva and a nationally recognized progressive arts studio based in Pittsburgh that elevates the work of artists with disabilities.

Johnson celebrates inclusion and imagination, offering a powerful vision for public art that reflects a true diversity of perspectives and lived experiences. ‘Western Pennsylvania Animals’ was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for Arts Landing and is part of an ongoing partnership with VaultArt to affirm the conviction that public spaces must reflect the full spectrum of human experience, including artists with disabilities.

The sculptures are now proudly displayed at Arts Landing, a newly developed outdoor civic space. Each sculpture measures an impressive three feet in length and enriches the community-focused atmosphere of this four-acre destination, which aims to host festivals and performances and provide spaces for public art appreciation and recreational activities.

Johnson's creative process began with a 3D scan of his original maquette, ensuring the intricacies of his designs would be preserved and enhanced in the final large-scale pieces. The digital models were transformed into sculptures that highlight each animal's unique characteristics. After the models were perfected, they were produced using PMMA print technology, coated with an outer layer for structural integrity, and then cast in aluminium. The final stage involved a rigorous finishing and sandblasting process, which accentuated fine details and prepared the sculptures for painting.
