Alick Tipoti

Alick Tipoti

Alick Tipoti is a renownd artist from Badu Island in the Torres Strait. His practice is informed by ancient knowledge about Torres Strait Islander culture. Using sculpture, installation, painting and lino-print to share symbols about the land, sea and sky of his country, Tipoti's work results in evocative artworks that take audiences on a direct figurative journey to their place of conception, regardless of siting. In recent years, Tipoti has examined western Torres Strait traditions through mask-making and performance.

A leader and mentor in his community to younger generations, Tipoti is one of the remaining few who speak the language of his people – the Kala Lagaw Ya – fluently. He studied in the first instance on Thursday Island, and later at the Australia National University in Canberra. In 2016 he completed a major rooftop commission in Monaco, Europe, designed to signify Badu Island culture.
