QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

Kim Walmsley is an Indigenous artist who creates art to support her own journey and to assist others in finding their path to self-discovery. She promotes cultural understanding and awareness between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Additionally, Walmsley is passionate about empowering youth to become the best versions of themselves, mentoring them to understand that life is a choice, regardless of their beginnings.

Braham Stevens, a Queensland-based artist, works with natural materials sourced along the Murray River's riverscape. He experiments with stone, recycled metals, and alloys to develop techniques and processes that lead to more permanent and durable structures capable of withstanding the elements and the passage of time.

Baiame is a collaborative artwork created by Walmsley and Stevens that is located at Cathro Park near Ruthven Street. Inspired by Dreaming stories, this piece serves as an abstract interpretation of the ancestral spirit Baiame and the essential elements of earth, air, fire, wood, metal, and water. The sculpture features bands of alternating fluid patterns and hand-drawn markings that symbolise these natural elements.

Nestled within the artwork is a smaller figure, the 'Water Spirit,' accompanied by guardians—a dragonfly and a water dragon—along the pathway. Together, they reference the surrounding swamplands and embody themes of growth and resilience. Created in a spirit of artistic collaboration, Baima reflects the cultural and natural heritage of the region as well as the diversity of the local community.

Our Brisbane team had the opportunity to collaborate with these artists and their vision to bring Baiame to life. They cast the piece in aluminium, sandblasted the concrete, and painted the intricate designs seen on the artwork.
