Antony Gormley

Antony Gormley is a renowned British artist celebrated for his thought-provoking sculptures and installations that delve into the intricate relationship between the human body and the surrounding space. Gormley’s work invites audiences to confront fundamental questions regarding human existence in relation to nature and the cosmos. His latest endeavour, New York Clearing, is a testament to his ongoing quest to embody this concept in a public setting.

New York Clearing is a striking installation located at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 3, where Gormley has created a vast, serpentine structure using 18 kilometres of square aluminium tubing. This sprawling, 50-foot-tall sculpture loops and coils without a clear beginning or end, establishing an immersive environment for viewers that contrasts the rigid grids of modern urban architecture with organic, flowing lines. As part of the larger global art initiative CONNECT, BTS, this work emerges from a collaboration between Gormley and the K-pop sensation BTS, who are dedicated to fostering artistic expression and engagement across various cities worldwide.

The installation serves not just as a visual experience but also as an invitation for visitors to interact with the space in meaningful ways. As Gormley describes it, moving through the maze-like structure allows individuals to engage with their surroundings, creating a personal journey through the artwork. On its opening day, local residents and tourists alike flocked to the sculpture, eager to navigate the labyrinth and capture the moment, highlighting the piece's ability to spark curiosity and promote social interaction.

Our team hired Nathaniel Stanton from Craft | Engineering Studio to specify materials and assist with the approval process for Brooklyn Bridge Park. We also coordinated with Torsilieri to manage the installation for all the equipment, purchased materials, and provided ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance with engineering specifications.
