Lachlan Turczan

Lachlan Turczan specialises in interdisciplinary creations that merge water, light, and sound. His work explores the visual representation of natural phenomena, utilising kinetic sculptures, light art, and video installations.

Our China team collaborated with Turczan and Shenzhen CR Land & China Merchants Shekou to create ‘Oculus’, a captivating water feature situated at the main entrance of Shenzhen MariVista, designed to deliver an immersive sensory experience through the orchestration of light, flowing water, and sound.

Inspired by the concept of "Heart of Tidal Observation," a lens through which the changing rhythms of the tidal environment can be experienced and understood, Turczan and our team established a core curatorial vision for ‘Oculus’ under the title OCULUS - Eye of the Ocean. This vision draws from the bay-inspired temperament and the essence of the surrounding landscape. Guided by the rhythmic rise and fall of the tides, set in motion by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun, it reflects the dynamic forces that continually shape the shoreline. Through the movement of flowing water and light, the work creates a distinct realm that connects the city, nature, and the passage of time.

‘Oculus’ uniquely combines digital programming with synchronised music, ripples, and lighting, offering distinctive visual experiences that change from day to night. The centrepiece is a circular water feature functioning as a floodlight, where dynamic ripples convey a dialogue between sound and motion. During daylight, natural light plays with the water, creating shimmering effects, while at night, underwater lighting enhances the tranquillity of the space, merging technology with the natural world for an enriched immersive experience.

Throughout the design process, our team worked closely with Studio Lachlan Turczan, making iterative adjustments to the lighting and water ripple effects that took into account site-specific conditions. This careful attention to detail allows for a dynamic synchronisation of music, ripples, and lighting, ultimately elevating the overall sensory experience and creating a sophisticated between elements that captivates visitors at every turn.
