#Too Ancient to Care
NEW YORK CITY, USA
Raven Halfmoon is a celebrated sculptor from Norman, Oklahoma, and a proud member of the Caddo Nation with ties to the Choctaw, Delaware, and Otoe-Missouria tribes. Her artwork often explores themes of identity and heritage, including her recent installation, Too Ancient to Care.
It illustrates a harmonious blend of traditional Indigenous coil-building techniques inspired by the Caddo Nation, alongside Halfmoon's contemporary aesthetic. The work draws inspiration from the Moai statues of Easter Island. It explores contrasts between light and shadow, masculinity and femininity, and the fusion of ancient and modern influences.
Too Ancient to Care is a remarkable installation showcased at the Whitney Biennial, created in collaboration with the Rock Tavern team and Salon 94. Towering at an impressive 9 feet and weighing 2,000 pounds, this clay sculpture is a celebration of strength, resilience, and ancestral legacy. The creation of her prior work with us The Guardians emerged from a collaborative journey that began during Halfmoon's residency at our Rock Tavern foundry in 2023. What started as an exploration of form in clay evolved into a bronze sculpture. Together, we decided to recreate her sculpture in its original medium, clay. Raven and our team constructed a kiln capable of handling her ambitious vision. With a blend of in-house expertise and external resources, we designed and built a specialised kiln that successfully fired a remarkable 2000-pound, 9-foot high piece to around 2200 degrees Fahrenheit.
