Based Upon

Founded in London in 2004 as an interdisciplinary artist, Based Upon has created a diverse portfolio of monumental works rooted in narrative and meaning. The studio continues to explore the stories that shape people, places, and organisations, delivering all-inclusive projects that encompass full-scope art curation, design, fabrication, and installation.

Based Upon recently unveiled a new public sculpture at Snow Beer’s headquarters in Shenzhen. Titled Vessel, this six-metre bronze sculpture features a patinated exterior and a highly polished interior. It serves as an abstract representation of a barley grain, which is the foundation of Snow Beer’s product.

The sculpture illustrates the journey of the liquid, from grain to mash, fermentation to storage, transportation, and ultimately, sharing. It embodies both the concept of an ancient container and the cross-section of a grain, where the husk acts as a natural shield for the valuable seed within. This work pays homage to one of humanity’s most significant catalysts, reflecting on the vessel’s essential role in storing, moving, and sharing resources throughout history.

Delivered by UAP as an all-inclusive project encompassing full-scope art curation, design, fabrication, and installation, the project lives in Shenzhen as part of a growing collection of large-scale public commissions in the retina.
