#Harlem Melodic Moments
NEW YORK CITY, USA
Puerto Rican artist Jorge Luis Rodriguez has made a significant impact in New York City with his captivating blend of minimalism and optical art. Initially starting as a two-dimensional artist, Rodriguez has now embraced three-dimensional forms, showcasing his multidisciplinary talents through stunning sculptures. His works reflect a thoughtful and diverse range of artistic expressions, illustrating his commitment to pushing the boundaries of contemporary art.
Rodriguez's artistic journey is deeply rooted in the vibrant neighbourhoods of Harlem and SoHo, both of which have played pivotal roles in fostering a multicultural alternative arts movement. This work aims to challenge conventional notions of art by promoting inclusion and diversity. This spirit is embodied in his latest creation, ‘Harlem Melodic Moments’, commissioned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Collaborating with MTA and Hatfield Metal Fabrication, Inc., we helped honour 40 years of MTA Arts & Design’s commitment to enhancing public spaces across the transit system.
‘Harlem Melodic Moments’ is an impressive installation that measures 6 feet high and 96 feet long on each side, totalling over 1,150 square feet. Spanning both the north and south faces of the Viaduct on East 116th Street in Harlem, it is part of the Park Avenue Viaduct Replacement project. This initiative aims to rehabilitate historic train infrastructure, ensuring safe and reliable train services for future generations.
The aluminium artwork is a vibrant celebration of East Harlem’s rich musical heritage, drawing inspiration from the area’s diverse musical history. Through a rhythmic design of concentric interlocking rings, Rodriguez visually represents the music of Harlem and El Barrio. Large-scale medallions, outlined in gold, feature renowned performers from various genres, including Salsa, Bolero, Latin Jazz, and Hip-Hop. These genres, which originated and flourished in the community, have gained international recognition and are now permanently honoured through Rodriguez’s remarkable sculpture.
Our NY project team collaborated with the artist and MTA in year-long design assist which included material studies, sampling, technical design, site coordination and engineering. After receiving artwork approval, the fabrication team laser cut and powder coated the decorative aluminium elements. The team created the subtle yet contrasting backdrop for the powder coated medallions by masking the ornamental pattern on the back panel prior to bead blast. All elements were assembled after finishing.
