Considered one of China’s most distinguished and inventive contemporary sculptors, Sui Jianguo’s Prophet rises 8 metres within a prestigious Gemdale development in Gangxia, Shenzhen. The cast bronze artwork with its gold finished surface is sited at the main entrance and acts as a portal, welcoming visitors into the commercial street which is the heart of Shenzhen.
A continuation of his Blind Portraits series, Sui creates initial clay maquettes which he builds intuitively by hand whilst blindfolded. Transformed into a large-scale public artwork, Prophet manifests the fundamental forces of physics through the intimate merging, twisting and distorting of material by a makers hand.
This process illustrates the artists playful exploration of traditional Chinese art and contemporary Western art through its combination of sensory intuition and subjective expression.
